Paul Nash (1889-1946) was a multi-faceted surreal British artist. He was a romanticist and lyrical painter, who visualized the image through use of symbols and modernistic attitude. There are subtle effects of war in his depictions. He was a prolific and hugely talented artist, besides a keen photographer, writer, book illustrator and graphics artist. He designed stage scenery, fabrics and posters.

Paul Nash as a modernist painter, he greatly influenced the landscape art of early 20th C. The paintings he produced during WW-I are among the most scenic abstractions of the conflict.

Paul Nash began with formal style, but gradually shifted to abstract and surreal style. There are great many symbolic motifs in this later day art. He often juxtaposed simple day to day objects with the uncanny scenes and nocturnal landscapes to achieve a new mystical identity.

During student days Nash struggled with figure drawing, and that reflects the absence of it in his art. From 1930s, Nash began to capture the world around through a camera. He often waited for hours to capture the scenic composition or light-shadow structure.

Harald Oscar Sohlberg (1869-1935) was Norway’s greatest landscape painter. He is known for Modernist Neo Romantic style. He studied at the Royal School of Art and Design of Christiania. He later trained under the graphic artist and painter Johan Nordhagen. Sohlberg also attended the Art School of Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen.

Sohlberg painted Nordic landscapes of wildness and mountains of Rondane. The town of Røros, in spite of the industrialized surroundings, was depicted for its natural scapes and wood buildings. He created mood and mystery with midwinter lights and twilight of Scandinavia. His paintings reflect the original manner of using colours. He combines elements of Romanticism, Naturalism and Symbolism in his Art.

Jonas Lie (1880-1940) was a Norway born, American painter. He came to the USA (at the age of 13 via Paris), and by the age of 40, with serene coastal scenes of New England and eastern Canada, he was one of the best-known landscape painters of his time.

Jonas Lie was known as an Impressionist artist with sense of brilliant saturated colours. He exploited the atmospheric effects at different times of day and seasons. But, he loved most the sunshine at the open sea-sides with minimal effect of the shadows. He painted trees standing tall, against the skies and terrain. His sails of the boats borrow the colours of the scene. He uses very few human being, but when he does that these are well configured.

His life and works, all revolved around the coastal areas, such as Plainfield, N.J., New York City and Cape Ann, Mass.
