Jean Francois Raffaelli (French, 1850-1924) was a Painter, Print-maker and a Writer. He had an interest in theatre and music. But to try his hand on painting, he had a short training in art. Interest in theatre art influenced his career. He took up painting in 1870, primarily producing costume pictures until 1876. He also began to draw in a realistic style, figures of ordinary people in the suburbs of Paris, like, peasants, workers, and rag-pickers. He also sketched landscapes of Paris, besides the portraits. He said ‘my subject is all Paris . . . I aim to paint the beauty of Paris as well as its wretchedness.’

He shifted to a studio on the Rue de Courcelles in Paris in 1892. This prompted him to a new direction in his art. He now used more colours and lighter scapes of Paris. His scenes of streets and boulevards reflect new inclination towards expressionism. His collection shows experiments in various styles of painting, subjects and composition.

He experimented with five-plate colour print-making. He preferred dry-point hatching. Print making taught him delineation of objects and people with edging high-light.

Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-impressionist artist. He started as an Impressionist, but encounter with Georges Seurat, Paul Signac and Camille Pissarro lead him to Pointillism*. But returned to Impressionism. Besides his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphics art, he was involved in anarchist activism.

His portfolio include sea coast landscapes Normandy and Brittany, street views of Paris, industrial scenes and workers in action. He also painted portraits, floral still life, domestic or interior scenes, etc. Many of his paintings reflect his political beliefs.

* Pointillism (or Divisionism) is a style of painting points or dots, which a viewer perceives as an optical blending effect of colours.

Mary S. Hagarty (1885-1936) was a painter and watercolourist. She was born in Canada, but worked in Britain. She was noted for her landscape paintings. She was a member of the Liver Sketching Club in 1892. She was a sister of painter Parker Hagarty.

Hagarty worked directly with her brush, without any formative pencil outline. Her choices of views are remarkable, as much as her style is original. Her drawings of Venice in rains show her skill of using water colour-shades for textural variations of wet surfaces. She uses ‘washed’ atmospheric effect for London mist. She uses lighter tones to form brighter environment. Few water colour drawings and fewer details about her are available.
