SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture by Gautam Shah
.
Mary S. Hagarty (1885-1936) was a painter and watercolourist. She was born in Canada, but worked in Britain. She was noted for her landscape paintings. She was a member of the Liver Sketching Club in 1892. She was a sister of painter Parker Hagarty.
Hagarty worked directly with her brush, without any formative pencil outline. Her choices of views are remarkable, as much as her style is original. Her drawings of Venice in rains show her skill of using water colour-shades for textural variations of wet surfaces. She uses ‘washed’ atmospheric effect for London mist. She uses lighter tones to form brighter environment. Few water colour drawings and fewer details about her are available.
