Lluis Rigalt (1814-1894) was Spanish painter and draftsman. He was born in Barcelona, in a family of artists. He, as a child was calm, melancholic, very quite person, disposed to contemplation of nature.

At the age 25 he was already famous as a master of landscape drawing. He became a professor of perspective at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona and appointed on academic merit by the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando.

Lluis Rigalt executed many decorative jobs. He was a stage stenographer in 1850.

Catalonia values him more for historical documentation of buildings and scenes, than as an artist. He is considered the founder of the Catalan landscape school.

He moved around the city streets and the forests of Catalonia, with his pad and pencil, making fast sketches, rather than forming scenes within the walls of the studio. He was serious, hardworking and orderly.

CASIMIRO SAINZ

Post 188 -Gautam Shah

SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah

Casimiro Sainz (1853-1898) was a Spanish painter. He was known for his landscapes and portraits with interior backgrounds.

At the age of 13, he was sent to Madrid to work in a grocery store, but, here took some drawing lessons. He had a tumor in the left hip, and he went to Matamorosa in 1881, to recover. The tumour condition led to the emotional instability, and he became increasingly unable to care for himself. Art dealers used to cheat him on this account.

Casimiro Sainz, between 1875 and 1881 he lived in Madrid, Toledo, Ávila and Segovia. This was a creative period for him. He painted many landscapes en plein aire around the city. He was known for ‘his luminous style, related to French Impressionism’. His Landscapes and other interior scenes are outstandingly sensitive. He, in spite of sickness and small oeuvres, was able to participate in several exhibitions and received good notices from the critics.

He died in Madrid, from an infection of his left leg, at a young age of 44.

HORACE PIPPIN

Horace Pippin (1888-1946) was a self-taught African-American artist. He was known for painting African American life. His paintings are full of rich colours and distinctive space organization. Pippin’s work is an unmediated transcription of a fully realized vision, be it imagined or observed, and one that is immune to the influence of the academic tradition. ‘My idea is that one, paints from heart and mind’ and, ‘I paint it exactly the way it is and exactly the way I see it’.

Pippin began to draw at an early age. His right arm was injured during the WW-I. He lived off his military pension, and in 1928 Pippin began producing paintings on cigar boxes. To paint, he used his left arm to support the right arm, holding the brush. Due to the injured arm, Pippin used small brush strokes. His early works have heavy impasto and restricted use of colour, but in later works he is more precise and with a bolder palette. His paintings were preconceived and rarely spontaneous. I do over the picture several times in my mind and when I am ready to paint it I have all the details I need. Pippin said the war brought out all the art in me. Pippin painted in relative obscurity during most of the 1930s. It took him three years to finish his first painting.
