SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture by Gautam Shah
.
Emma Ciardi (1879-1933) was Italian Impressionist, from a family of artists. She studied under her father, the distinguished Italian realist artist Guglielmo Ciardi. Emma studied the painting technique of Francesco Guardi and became part of the ancient tradition of Vedutismo.
Emma painted the north Italian landscapes, lagoons, and the great villas, and gardens of her hometown of Venice. Her style of was of high textured impressionism, using both impasto colours and strong brush strokes. She rarely uses shadows or the architectural form, but rather relies on colour contrast between the illuminated and other surfaces. Her human figures are in-descript blocks, without much postural expression. She was a Romanticist, not of the current era, but of previous one. She had the capacity to figure out complex scenes.
