SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture, by Gautam Shah
.
William Merritt Chase (1849-1916), was American Painter, of Landscapes (Plein air and Impressionist), portrait and Still-life.
In 1872, after initial studies in Indianapolis and at New York’s National Academy of Design, Chase chose to work in Munich, than in Paris. In Munich, he began to use intense dark colours, dramatic chiaroscuro effects, over the realist art.
But, once back in USA, he began to exploit the
art with a lighter palette, looser brush strokes
and impressionistic character. In addition to
painting, Chase developed an active interest in
teaching, and commercially highly lucrative
portrait work. He was innovative in his art,
using diverse ideas, effects and techniques for,
genre scenes, portraits and still life.
