SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah
Gerard Jozef Portielje (1856-1929) was born in Antwerp, son of Belgian Painter, Jan Portielje. His younger brother, was also a painter. He first attended a trade school until the age of 14 years, then moved to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp.
Portielje was also a professor of drawing at the Antwerp Academy. He specialized in genre scenes with mainly interior settings. The interiors represent the lifestyle and social customs of the era that was little earlier than his own times. His interiors were thematically filled in with details.
