GIUSEPPE ABBATI

SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah

Giuseppe Abbati (1836-1868) was an Italian painter of en plein air scenes of landscapes and Interiors. Abbati belonged to the group known as the Macchiaioli. He received early training from his father, mostly of architectural interiors.

Abbati ’s paintings have a bold treatment of light effects, aided by macchia (the brushstroke). The bright and contrasting colours reflect the Impressionism. He painted very wide horizontal landscapes, as commonly favoured by the Macchiaioli group. He also painted bright exteriors, contrasted by dark interiors, in narrow vertical format, framed through doors, windows and gates.
