Jacques François Joseph Carabain, (1834-1933 Amsterdam) was Dutch-Belgian Painter. He began art studies with landscapes, seascapes and cityscapes, at the Amsterdamer Kunstakademie. He lived in Amsterdam until 1856, then moved to Brussels, for a while, before settling in Schaerbeek.
He was known for scenes of cities and buildings in the Romantic-Realist style. He painted Medieval and Baroque structures and local busy markets. He painted cities in Italy, Germany, France and Austria. In 1885, he travelled to New Zealand and Australia. From 1894-1897, he painted a series of 59 water colours depicting the old areas of Brussels.
He has produced number of Water colour drawings (plate15-27) touched with pencils (crayon colours). These have lyrical character due to the diffused edges.
