SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture

Heinrich Hansen (1821-1890) was a Danish architectural painter. His son, Adolf Heinrich-Hansen, was also an architectural painter, but later turned to animal painting.

Hansen studied at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen in 1842 with the intention of becoming a decorative painter.

Hansen secured a grant to study in Germany, and here, he decided to be an architectural painter. He was the first and a remarkable architectural painter of Denmark. With own income support, he travelled across the western Europe. On return, he became a teaching assistant and then a professor for perspective and ornamentation, at the Academy. Over the years, he also worked on restoration projects at Rosenborg, Kronborg and Frederiksborg castles. He also designed furniture, silverware and porcelain.

The artist created architectural landscapes and interiors of churches and palaces. Many of the details were so meticulous and truthful that these are used for restoration of historical places.

His forte was drawing columns, arches and vaulted spaces.

This part covers Heinrich Hansen’s Architectural drawings. Next Sunday post will cover the Interior Spaces.
