Heinrich Hansen (1821-1890) was a Danish architectural painter. His son, Adolf Heinrich-Hansen, was also an architectural painter, but later turned to animal painting.

Hansen studied at Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, Copenhagen in 1842 with the intention of becoming a decorative painter.

Hansen secured a grant to study in Germany, and here, he decided to be an architectural painter. He was the first and a remarkable architectural painter of Denmark. With own income support, he travelled across the western Europe. On return, he became a teaching assistant and then a professor for perspective and ornamentation, at the Academy. Over the years, he also worked on restoration projects at Rosenborg, Kronborg and Frederiksborg castles. He also designed furniture, silverware and porcelain.

The artist created architectural landscapes and interiors of churches and palaces. Many of the details were so meticulous and truthful that these are used for restoration of historical places.

His forte was drawing columns, arches and vaulted spaces.

This part covers Heinrich Hansen’s Architectural drawings. Next Sunday post will cover the Interior Spaces.

SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture

Carlos De Haes, (1829-1898), was a Spanish painter from Belgium. He was a realist painter of nature and architecture. He charted his own style that took him away from the Romanticism to Realism. He was one of the first Spanish landscape painters to do so. His works relate to depiction of trees, wild terrains, coastal areas and buildings, all against clouds filled skies.

He believed in direct observation of the nature, and prepared many sketches during visits to the site. His style inspired many to follow this Spanish ‘flavour’. Haes' success with landscapes, was also due to the modest size of compositions, which allowed him to handle them well.

His brush strokes, reflects the impressionist manner, but rather modestly. His experiments with light and colour relates only to the skies. The skies in various extent are seen through all the scenes. His paintings lack the instantaneity or spontaneity, till in later days, when he moved to freer Barbizone School style.

Haes believed that the ‘end result of art should be the truth found in the imitation of nature, the source of all beauty’. ‘The painter should imitate nature as closely as possible, and to do so, one must know nature and not rely on imagination’.

In 1857 he became the first professor of landscape painting, and in 1860, he became an Academic at the Royal Academy.

FRANCISCO LLORENS DÍAZ

Post-213  -by Gautam Shah

SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture

Francisco Llorens Díaz (1874- 1948, Madrid) was a Spanish-Galician painter, known for landscapes, still-lifes and portraits. Nature was the main topic of his paintings. He was the painter of seascapes. He spent his time to show landscapes along the seaside of Galicia. He loved the sea coast of Galicia, where he would spend hours drawing and painting this nature. He almost preferred to paint, the places very close to his residences.

“Landscapes impress us because of the form of what is in them, their colour, and above all, the emotions they awaken in our spirit. Precisely because these emotions are the soul of the landscape, we have to gather them directly from there, so we can feel them in all their intensity”.

He travelled Belgium and the Netherlands, Madrid, Galicia, Paris, Bruges and Barcelona. He painted plein-air, capturing the changes in the light. He explored light and colours with tones of blue, grey, silver, green, lemon-yellow and ochre. He was influenced by his teacher, Sorolla, who was a significant impressionist and post-impressionist artist.
