Egon Schiele (1890-1918), was one of the most prolific Austrian artists, who in a short life of 28 years, produced more than 3000 works. Schiele from young age was fond of drawing trains from his station master father’s house. At the age of 16, he moved to Vienna to study at the Academy of Fine Arts. Here, Gustav Klimt who had formed the Vienna Secession, became his mentor. Schiele, remained close friends but moved away from Klimt’s ‘ornate Art Nouveau and developed own Expressionist style. This was a stark, raw and deeply emotional expression drawn with a darker palette. This post presents his studies and sketches.

Frances Hodgkins (1869-1947) was a New Zealand-based Landscape painter. She had art education in the local Dunedin School of Art. She also became an art teacher in England for a while. She frequently visited Europe but her stay in England remained most important one.

Frances Hodgkins was a skilled painter in traditional sense, but she became increasingly desirous of finding a place in Europe’s art scene. She decided in 1908, to settle in Paris. She increasingly became impressionistic and turned into a modernist. She used the simple forms, to build up the space and then exploit them further with contracting colours. She continued with water colours, but also used oil paints and charcoals. She mixed the conventions of still life painting for landscape painting. She unified her compositions by playing with texturing brushstrokes. The colours helped her to convey light and movement.

Frances Hodgkins favoured marketplaces, streets, boats and waterfronts as topics. She painted freely and spontaneously. When she found that lacking, shifted the location. Her works’ portfolio was of nearly seventy paintings, produced over nearly fifty years, in diverse media and subject matter.

Johannes Itten (1888-1967) was a Swiss expressionist painter, designer, colour theorist, writer and teacher with Weimar Bauhaus. He first studied at Geneva’s École des Beaux-Arts in 1909, but returned to Bern-Hofwil Teachers’ Academy. In 1912, he came to Geneva to study with abstract painter Eugène Gilliard.

Itten taught fundamentals of material qualities, composition, and colour at the Bauhaus (from 1919 to 1922). He wrote a book ‘The Art of Colour’(1961). He believed ‘Colours must have a mystical capacity for spiritual expression, without being tied to objects’.

Itten adopted a series of basic geometric shapes (the line, the plane, the circle, the spiral), along with the exploration of the colour contrasts. His artworks cover a wide range of styles and experiments in composition.
