STANISLAWA de KARLOWSKA

Stanislawa De Karlowska (1876-1952) was a Polish-born artist. She was trained as an artist in Cracow, and than at the Académie Julian in Paris. She was a founder member of the London Group, and exhibited with them throughout her life. She married Camden Town Group painter Robert Bevan and they settled in London. As a member of Camden Town Group, she followed a modern post-impressionist style with bright colours to depict the local urban environment, the growing industrial landscape, and the countryside.

Stanislawa was a modernist with traces of Polish folk art. She overcame her initial inability to detail the nature and human figures, with the bold use of colours. She continued to exploit bold colours to achieve her expression of an abstract character. Her paintings have been consistently compared with her husband’s works (Robert Bevan). Her art had flatter perspectives, intense colours, elongated figures and dream-like atmosphere.
