Clarkson Frederick Stanfield (1793-1867) was an English painter. He was known for his sea coast art and large scale landscapes. His father, and other family members were also painters.

Stanfield in his young age, was a sailor. These voyages exposed him to intimate experience with the sea. He was fond of sail boats on choppy seas, extreme weather and dynamic scenes. But he began the carrier with coach decoration, theatrical scene painting. He created moving dioramas and panorama ( The Venetian panorama was a roll of 300 feet length and 20 high, and was gas lit). The theatre or stage-art helped him to handle vast scapes, whereas, moving rolled scenes helped him to connect various pieces of scenes.

Stanfield's easel and theatrical work was based on experiences gained over extensive domestic and foreign tours, and meticulous sketches made on the site. His travels at home and in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Ireland allowed him to create wide range of scenes.

Stanfield was elected as Associate Member of the Royal Academy in 1832, and became a full Academician in February 1835.
