GIORGIONE

 Post -310

SUNDAY feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah

Giorgione (1477-78 -1510) was extremely influential Italian Painter, initiators of a High Renaissance style in Venetian art, characterised by use of colour and mood. Giorgio Vasari said he surpassed the older and contemporary masters, by adopting a modern technique.

He died due to plague, at a young age, in his thirties. Very little details are known. Only six of his paintings are assuredly attributed to him. His qualities of mood and mystery are seen in The Tempest (1505), an evocative pastoral scene. His worked with softer tones, and is known for the elusive poetic quality.

He worked with his younger contemporary Titian. Titian painted much of the landscape and perhaps integrating the scene. His scenes paintings have both, religious and secular contents. But in both, he always included architectural objects, without letting them over-power the scene composition or subdue the scene characters.
