Sunday Feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah
Louise Rayner (1832-1924) was a British watercolour artist. Her, both the parents were noted artists, She studied painting first with her father and later with established artist friends of the family. Her first work (Interior of Haddon Chapel, Derbyshire, in oil) was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1852. Rayner’s preferred medium from 1860, was water and pencil colours.
Rayner lived in Chester, Cheshire, but travelled extensively, painting British scenes. Her early paintings show fascination of older buildings and possibly imaginary street life. She took artistic liberty to redefine the architecture and the perspective views to make picturesque composition.
