SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah
,
Jan van Goyen (1596-1656) was a Dutch landscape painter in the Netherlands during the early 17th C. He was a prolific artist, with 1200 paintings and nearly 1000 drawings to his credit. Goyen marks the Dutch Golden Age. He rendered Holland’s rich village life, maritime activities, panoramic views of Dutch cities, and coastal and winter scenes with naturalistic atmospheric effects. He mostly painted in oil, on wood panels.
Goyen rendered wide plains, as seen from a height with low horizons and clouded skies. He was one of the first painters, to capture the quality of the light and air in scenes and to suggest the movement of clouds.
Goyen’s paintings are largely based on sketches made during his travels in the countryside. He often exploited the same ‘frames’ several times in his works.
Paintings of 1620-1630 period are well detailed, with use of strong colours. In later periods, he developed a personalized style, with use of simpler compositions and spatial broadness in landscapes.
