Tom Roberts (Thomas William Roberts 1856 -1931) was an Australian impressionist artist. He was an important proponent of the en plein air painting, and encouraged other artists for national (Australian) narratives. He rarely included human beings in his landscape paintings, but was an excellent portraitist.

Roberts did his painting many media like in water colours, oils and acrylics. His subjects were equally varied, but his love for coastal areas and rural or country scenes dominated his art. He exploited Australia atmospheric effects like light, heat, lands, barren spaces, bushes and distances. He gradually turned to low-key tonal impressionist effects and naturalism to highlight the terrain characteristic and clouds. He painted many evocative small (on cigar boxes lids) landscapes and seascapes.

Francisco Gutiérrez Cabello (1616-1670) was Spanish Baroque style painter specializing in fantasy architectural scapes, infused with historical-religious narratives. He was a skilled composer to integrate these two aspects. His landscape art specialization, could have taken place in the workshop. of Juan de la Corte.

Gutiérrez began composing wide imaginary scapes with rich architectural details. He practised perspectives, often trying out multiple versions for correct ‘point of view’ (almost like modern computer aided 3D dynamic). His views are believed to be inspired by engravings by Hans Vredeman de Vries.

Gutiérrez used fairly clear tones and brilliant colours. He also exploited chiaroscuro effect (Italian =light-dark), for shadows, and for endowing volumetric sense for objects and depth perception. These were tools that made perspectives as outstanding scenes.

David Roberts (1796-1864) was a Scottish painter. He was a house trained for seven years with a house-painter and decorator. He began his career as a painter and designer of stage scenery for circus and stage. He is known for his painting tours to the Egypt and the Near East. He produced large oil paintings on the sketches-studies he made during the visit.

J. M. W. Turner persuaded Roberts to abandon scene painting, and devote himself to becoming a full-time artist. Roberts worked with a lithographer Louis Haghe from 1842 to 1849 to produce the meticulously illustrated plates of the holy land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia.

David Roberts’ style was realistic and romantic. He was always drawn to the exotic. He produced well detailed architectural and terrain scapes, where the buildings become both lived in spaces and panoramic back-drops. He was expert in selecting areas with emphatic detailing and leaving out others with a fuzzy outline. He is recognised as one of the leading Orientalist painters of the period.
