SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah
Giuseppe Zocchi (1711or 1716-1767) was a painter, etcher, fresco painter, drafts-person and print-maker, from Florence Italy. Zocchi had his first art training in Florence. He is well known for his vedute (scenes) of the city, in sketches, etchings and oil paint. He also painted frescoes at several places.
Zocchi had patronage of Marchese Andrea Gerini, for travel to Venice, Milan, Bologna, and Rome. During the travel, he picked up craft of perspective drawing. He mastered the art of engraving, as student from Joseph Wagner in Venice in 1740s. Several engravers based their etchings on Zocchi's drawings. Zocchi was called ‘Canaletto of Florence’. What Francesco Guardi and Canaletto did for Venice, and Giovanni-Battista Piranesi did for Rome, Giuseppe Zocchi did for Florence.
