ERNESTINE VON KIRCHSBERG

 Post 192 -by Gautam Shah

Sunday feature on ART of Architecture

Ernestine von Kirchsberg (1857-1924) was an Austrian landscape painter, born in Italy. She took her first art lessons in 1873, at the Landscape Drawing Academy, Graz, Austria. After 1881, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna.

She worked in ‘atmospheric school of landscape painting’ that was peculiar to Austria. It was known as ‘Stimmungsimpressionismus’ (Mood impressionism). She took up watercolours, and was initially known for that genre. Her style of landscapes reflect on the spot capture, with fast brushwork in impressionists captures. Her colours reflect the warmth of sunshine and a sense of fulfillment. She worked on rural and remote places rather than urban scenes.

She exhibited frequently in Vienna, Berlin, Prague, Graz, etc. She won a prize 1893, at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. She made several painting expeditions to the Adriatic, Styria, Carniola and the South Tyrol.
