SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture
.
Luigi Bazzani, (also known as Il Bazzanetto) (1836-1927) was an Italian painter, illustrator, and water-colourist. He studied art at Bologna's Accademia di Belle Arti. Bazzani, then travelled to France, Germany and, finally in 1861 settled down Rome. He tried his hand on genre and landscape subjects besides set design work for theaters.
The rediscovery of Pompeii in 1748, prompted him to document the ruins. He devoted 35 years (1880 to 1915) of his life sketching and water colour drawing of the city buildings and streets. Bazzani experimented with the techniques of architectural relief. He also produced several Oil Paintings showing the life style of people of Pompeii using the water colours and studies of Interior and Architectural characteristics. He used subdued colours to depict chipped and weather decayed surfaces of the ancient stone work. Many of the interior colours and finer architectural characteristics are now lost, but Bazzani’s drawings provide finest images. .
