SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture
.
Agostino Tassi (1578-1644) (original name Agostino Buonamici, Perugia), was a painter of landscapes and seascapes. He aspired to nobility, so he modified the name and details of his early life. He was considered a master of perspectives and illusionistic architectural scenes. He was good at seascapes, fishing scenes and images of ports and ships. Tassi painted frescoes in several Roman palaces. Tassi also served as the master to French painter Claude Lorrain.
In his later career he seems to have abandoned illusionistic architecture in favour of landscape. His architectural scapes show monumental buildings, between reality and fantasy but with strong verticality.
He went down in history for rapping Artemisia
Gentileschi and conviction. But his works are of
rare finesse.
