Abbot Suger (1081 – 1151) was a priest, statesman and good administrator, but was not an Architect. And yet, he has been called the father of Gothic architecture and design innovator. Suger is known for rebuilding of the Abbey of St.-Denis also known as Cathedral Basilica of St Denis, near Paris. The rebuilding included many trend setting features marking the emergence of Gothic style over the Romanesque,in France.
H.W. Janson wrote, "The origin of no previous style can be pinpointed as exactly as that of Gothic. It was born between 1137 and 1144 in the rebuilding, by Abbot Suger, of the Royal Abbey Church of Saint-Denis, just outside the city of Paris."
The Basilica of Saint-Denis was an important
organization of France as the burial place for nearly
every king from the 10th to 18th C., and also as many
from the previous centuries. The remains of the other
monarchs were removed from the destroyed Abbey of
St Genevieve. The basilica of Saint-Denis was a place
of pilgrimage, attracted by the relics of Saint Denis, the
patron saint of Paris. Paris was the principal residence
of the Kings of France. The Reims Cathedral was used
as the place of coronation, and the Abbey of
Saint-Denis became the ceremonial burial place. The
King and his successors both profusely supported both
the places.
