SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture

Willem Koekkoek (1839 - 1895) was a Dutch painter born in Amsterdam. In Amsterdam, the Koekkoek family, spanning three generations, was highly regarded as an artistic dynasty.

His favoured subject matters were the town scenes of winter in the Netherlands. It was a field of painting that was distinct from those of the remaining members of the extended family. Willem Koekkoek originally worked as an architect and had tremendous success. His handling of colour and depiction of light and shadows was exclusively of his own style.

SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah

Jean Achille Benouville (1815-1891) was a French landscape painter. He painted many landscapes in the vicinity of Paris, Italia Compiègne and Fontainebleau. He also depicted people from the Italian countryside in his works.

After a stay of three years at the Villa Médicis, he decided to remain in Italy, but continued to display his works at exhibitions in Paris. He shared a studio in Rome with Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. His early works influenced by Corot, however his later Italian landscapes are in the tradition of Claude Lorrain.

Benouville worked with oil painting and also used gouaches and water-colours. He was traditional artist and assimilated different influences in Rome. He was one artist who continued with classical landscape style against an onslaught of Impressionists. His scapes are set against the vast extent of lands, with architecture being dwarfed, yet posited well.
