SUNDAY Feature on ART of Architecture -by Gautam Shah
Jan Hendrik Verheijen (1778-1846) was of Utrecht, a Dutch painter. He was primarily known as a painter of city scenes of Utrecht. He made landscapes, church interiors and portraits. He favoured 17th-18th C houses, medieval churches or city gates. He was extremely accurate (skill gained as a draftsman) and used warm colours. He used sunlight to bring in certain warmth, not just by colours but by including human activities, which often turned out false. He often began with on-site architectural sketches, partly fantasizing with own input for human figures, their dresses and paraphernalia.
